Car Washing for Fund Raising

On the 25th of February,
we'll be organising a car wash project which is to raise funds for our club.
Teacher's cars from Smk Batulapan will be charged as the cars is washed.
Taking part in this project are all leos from the morning sessions.

Dear afternoon sessions, we dont want you guys to get wet and get into class all soaked =)
Dont worry, we have another project for you running at the same time as the car washing. You guys will be repainting the pingpong court of our school and do a little refurbishing.

Blog Designing Competition

We're having a blog skin designing competition.
All you have to do is design a skin, blogspot compatible ones and then copy the html and paste it to us.
It can be from you currently existing blog, we're not stalking you :p.
We just need the html code from the skin section.
The judging system is base on votes (likes) on facebook.

Winners of course will be awarded :)

The winners of this competition will have their skins featured on our club blog and we'll trademark it to you.

A Busy and Hectic Journey Down South and Back Up To North

During the last weekeng which is the 10th of September to 12th of September, our president Leo Foo Kok Way together with three other presidents Leo Darius Beh from La Salle PJ, leo Chin Kar Yern from USJ 8 and Leo Vincent Liew from leo club of SamTet took part in a journey to Johor and Back up to Ipoh with DC Lion Alan and RCC Lion Marcus.

On the 10th of September, their itinerary starts with attending the Kluang Joint Installation by the Leo Club of Kluang, Kluang East and Leo club of Kluang West.
After that, they went to Batu Pahat Leo Clubs Joint Installation by the Leo Club of Chinese School, Batu Pahat High School, and Leo Club of Dato Syed Esa.
That marks the end of the first day as they then retire to hotel for some rest.

On the 11th of September, they drove all the way to Ipoh from Batu Pahat. It was a long 6 hours drive journey. At Ipoh, the four presidents had a fellowship event with the Leo Club of Ipoh Metro Omega.

On the 12th of September, they took part in the joint project with Perak Leos at the Jelapang Old Folks Home. They get together to clean up the home and also have a chatting sessions with them. All of them had fun time listening to the old folks sharing their pass experience.
At 1pm after the joint project, they attended a fellowship session with Perak Leos at Cappucino Cafe. They chat, exchange namecards, share experience on their opinions on Leoism and so on. This tightens the bonds between KL leos and Perak Leos as we're all in one big family.

They then start their journey back to KL after that.

A Christmas For All

In conjunction with the Christmas Day coming right up, Our club and the Lions Club of PJ Metro organised a project to raise fund for the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).

The main objective is to of course raise fund for NKF. These funds are used by NKF to sponsor the poor for dialysis.

Here is how it works,
We're selling socks.
It costs RM10 for 2 pair but only one pair will be given to you. The other one will be hung up the giant Christmas Tree in Time Square.

In foreign countries, hanging socks on a christmas tree is a form of wishing just like tossing a coin in a pond.

Service Without Borders.

On the last Tuesday, the seventh of September three B.O.D members of our club which is Leo Kok Way, Leo Kevin Luke and Leo Pak Juin took part in a project called Service Without Borders together with the National Kidney Foundation ambassador Azizi Zakaria.

Abang Aris, a patient with kidney problem and has to go for dialysis three times a week. He was also previously diagnose with kidney failure and he currently has less than 20% eyesight. He has a family of six incuding himself, wife and four children where two of them are still schooling. Their monthly household income are less them RM 2000. Living in a big city like Kuala Lumpur, the cost of living is too high for them. Abang Aris and his family never enjoyed a cheerful Hari Raya since the past four years.

Together with Lion Shirley, Azizi and Lion Alan, we took Abang Aris's family to Giant at Kota Damansara to buy them some grocery, clothings and also a buka puasa session with them.

We are glad to be given a chance to play our role to the society. We believe that we Made A Difference and hope that other club can reach out and help those needy. Abang Aris is only one among the thousands of other family that needs our help.

M.A.D Celebration

The objective of this project is to celebrate our 40th years in service of Leo Clubs in Malaysia. Our Board of Directors together with the members will be cleaning up a playground in Jalan Nuri, Bandar Puchong Jaya.

Mooncake Festival Celebration @ Rumah Shalom

Our club will be having a Mooncake Festival Celebration at Rumah Shalom, Jalan Tiong on 18th of September 2010. Its on Saturday and the celebration will begin at 5pm, so fellow leos please come and join us for the fun!!

10th Installation of BOD & Induction of New Members

Our club have its 10th installation on the 20th of August, last Friday. The event was a success and a installation to be remembered organised by Leo Kevin Luke, our Vice President.

The installation was a 2 and a half hour starting at 1pm.

Hanging Flags in conjuction with Merdeka!

Well Well Well... It's here again! What's here again? Hari Merdeka!!! Every year, Before August 16th. Our club will help the school to hang and put up flags around the school. So called 'Decorating the flag' It's a very fun project for the guys but not girls because this project needs climbing and strength. XD This project is organize by our School Service Director FY 2010/2011, Leo Soo Jian Guan. Around 7 -8 Leo Club members gave a helping hand in this project.

Mural Painting

Our Club actually painted all the murals on the 'Taman Sains' wall because the paints are very dull and it really need touch up so Environmental Service Director 2010/2011, Leo S.Aswary has implement the Mural Painting Project. This project is not only about painting murals but also a building a good bond between the members and Board of Directors 2010/2011. Leo S.Aswary called all the members to attend and about 90% of the members actually attended this project.

Recycling Files!

Basically this project is a very simple project which consists of School Service and also Environmental. We collected about 50 files in just few minutes from the teachers and then our club members bring the files to the nearest recycle bin to recycle it.
This project is organize by out Vice President 1 FY 2010/2011, Leo Kevin Luke. Here are the pictures of our club members together with the OC & President collecting files!:)

A New Beginning...

1st July 2010 has arrive and its the day where the new fiscal year 2010-2011 begins.

As we know, the fiscal year 2009-2010 has ended and during that fiscal year, I've learn alot as a Vice President 1. Most importantly, my 3 bosses which is Leo Wai Chee as the President, Lion Shirley Koh as the Leo Advisor and Pn Wong Lee Fong as Faculty Advisor. They really guide me through out the fiscal year about being a LEO and meaning of Leadership,Experience and Opportunity. Not to forget, DC for Leo Clubs, Lion Alan Thoo has given me opportunity and shared his experience with me.

To get this post which is President sounds easy but its always hard to be a President. There are alot of challenges I have to face but I believe in myself and I believe my BOD fiscal year 2010-2011 will really help me to obtain achievements that I aim for. Therefore, Im trying to say that Leo Club is not only about individuals but a team. Teamwork and unite as one in this organization is the top priority.

So, as the President of Leo Club of SMK Batu Lapan fiscal year 2010-2011, I promise my BOD and I will make a difference!.

- Save Haiti Project -

Hey its been long time since the blog is not updated...Well....We are back with new post!

Im sure you all heard about the Haiti Earthquake on news or newspapers. Its sad to see those people living there suffering till now. They need our help and they need funds to rebuild everything there especially their homes because alot of the victims has lost their homes and also their families.

Our club decide to help,care and save them. This project is called *SAVE HAITI*...We have done with our donations from students in school. For now...we have collected Rm252. I know its not much but these amount of money can help them! We also design a badge for this project. The profit of the badges will be given to our Haiti Fund! So fellow Leos PLEASE buy the badges to support us!

Updates - Leo Idol Season 3

Attention to all Leos in REGION 5!!!,

Will Selangor be the next Leo Idol Champion?

Do you guys or fellow Leos have what it takes to be the next Leo Idol Champion?

Well...then show your talent to us because it's gonna be a blast where new rules, new judges, new categories and new faces will be joining the Leo Idol Season 3 2010...

Here are the categories:-

Before listing it...There will be some changes for this year and the changes are open talent competition...Yes!!! This year Leo Idol will be an open talent competition. Any talents will be accepted. As we believe not only singers have to be an 'idol' Categories include the following:

i) Singing (solo, duet or groups of 4)
ii) Dancing (solo, duet or groups of 4)
iii) Stand Up Comedian (solo)
iv) Music instrumentalist (solo, duet, triplet or quartet) on any musical instrument
v) Beat Boxing (solo)
v) Other categories (Magic Show, Mime, etc)

This will not be like before where participants have to attend an audition round and the selected few to take part in the regional finals. In all preliminary rounds, the “Open Mic” system will be adopted. This is where all participants solo or group, will display their talents. They will be allowed to perform for 60 seconds and if the judges do not ring the bell, they will be allowed to complete their performance of not more than 5 minutes long.

Marks will be tabulated on the spot and the average mark for the participant will be displayed on screen. The best of 5 will go to Round 2 where they will be performing for the second time. Each of the 5 finalist will be allowed to complete their performance. One will represent the respective regional prelimary round to the Inter-District LEO Idol finals in Kuala Lumpur in April.

As we know... The 3 beloved Leo members from Leo Club of Chung Ling High School which is Leo Jason Ch'ng,Leo Brandon and Leo Yi Zhang passed away last week. It's a very sudden and sad news to hear but Leo's remember to be strong and stay strong. As a respect to them, Lion Alan Thoo as The DC for Leo Clubs in District 308B2 09/10 decide to ask all the Leos in the district to put on a red ribbon as a respect to them for a week and so our club decide to put on the red ribbon.

3rd RCC Meeting!

ATTENTIONS Leo's,

As proposed during the 2nd RCC Meeting held at Taylor's University College on 7th November 2009, Leo Club of La Salle Klang will be hosting the 3rd RCC Meeting of the fiscal year 2009/2010 within the months of January and February 2010. However, due to Thaipusam celebration on the 30th January 2010, we would not be able to conduct the meeting on that particular week. Thus, the meeting would most probably be held on the 7th of February 2010, which falls on a Sunday.

The details of the 3rd RCC Meeting 2009/2010 stands as below for the time being:-

Date : 7 February 2009 (Sunday)
Time : 8.30a.m. - 1.30p.m.
Venue : Goh Tiang Chin Hall, SMK La Salle Klang
Attire : Strictly Club Uniform/School Uniform

Please be reminded that a fee of RM8 is charged to Leos who register and confirm their attendance before a stated deadline. (The deadline will be notified in a confirmation letter which will be sent later within this week). Otherwise, a fee of RM 10 is charged.

Thus, most administration work for this meeting will be done through the internet or other communication means.

Farewell & Fellowship Party

On the 10th of December 2010, Our club has organize a party...It's actually a farewell party for the form 5 Leos and also a fellowship party to strengthen the relationship between the members and also the Board of Directors. It was a successfull party because it did not rain and thanks to some of the Leos for praying hard to GOD!!! Well...The Leos did enjoy BBQ-ing the chickens and sausages. Other than that, the Leos also enjoy themselves playing the games such as pinata and water balloons. Lastly, i would like to thanks Lion Terry,Lion ShirleyLion Samantha,Lion David,Pn Wong Lee Fong,IPP Vivien Chew and Leos for attending the party. I would like to say thank you again to those Leos who helped to clean Vivien's house.

Its the month of august again!!!!Which means its the month we got our freedom from the British.Mederka(a Malay term which means freedom)is celebrated annually throughout Malaysia on the 31st of august.

Well every year we are in charge of hanging up the Malaysia flags everywhere in our school.The main purpose of this is to recognise and also carry on the patriotic spirit among ourself.

Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-twentieth century, and it is projected to continue.

Increasing global temperature will cause the sea levels to rise, and is expected to increase the intensity of extreme weather events. Other effects of global warming include changes in agricultural yields, trade routes, glacier retreat, many species extinctions and increases in the ranges of diseases.

The increasing frequency of heat waves in the temperate zones, typhoons, hurricanes and floods are signs of the changing weather and climate patterns and all these come about largely due to global warming -a combination of the greenhouse effect and other natural phenomena like solar variation and volcano eruptions. Unless drastic measures are taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, global warming will continue to worsen.

However, global warming can be reduced by using garbage enzymes. So do your bit and help reduce global warming for a cooler and healthier living environment for all of us! Help save Our Earth!

The Leo Club Of SMK Batu Lapan started this program by promoting it amongst the Leos of Batu Lapan.

Every year, Leos dedicates their time and effort to beautify the club's Leo Garden..its hard job...wat with the wet dirt, fire ants all around and the never ending mutant orchid roots growing (!!!!!!)... which juz brings the Leos of SMK Batu Lapan to clean and beautify the garden EVERY YEAR...

this year, we cut the root (again), ferterlise them ( more! ), paint the rusty grills ( u won't believe they were grills, they look more like....rocks! ) and ( leo soon boon : ) paint the pot! haha

Health Board

This programme is done as to instill the imperative awareness of taking good care of our health, especially in this escalating rise of globalization which may lead to several health problems. The Leos decided to pick up a few posters from booths during the Leo-Lion Serving Together Health Awareness Campaign that was held last month with the Lion Club of Shah Alam so that this programme can be carried out in school as well. We were given the permission to have our bulletin in the empty spot at the study chamber across the laboratories (Serambi Budi) where students gather to self-study and also the canteen. It was indeed a strategic and deliberate place as many students have taken up the interest by reading the posters, leaflets and brochures we pasted on the bulletin. This project would be handled by the Form 3 Leos as they have already finished their PMR Examinations under the guidance of Madam Ooi Saw Geok. Leo Au Wai Chee, as the School Service Director was assigned to take over the programme that would need to be updated constantly.

Bulletin Update ; Unity

With full force and high spirit, the new Board of Directors came up with several ideas of decorating the Bulletin Board for the upcoming festivals. Not only that, we can now proudly say that our club has the biggest bulletin board in the school, and with that we must not fail to impress the students and teachers. The bulletin board was filled with the Board of Director’s list, announcements, invitation letters, articles on the respective festive and also colourful greeting cards. The photo booth consisting of the photo updates on the Leos was temporarily taken down as there was no sufficient place to fill up the bulletin board what with the decorations and greeting cards. The top of the bulletin was decorated with paper lanterns made from different colours and the rest of the place was decorated with simple prints of lion paw prints to represent the LEO Club. Overall, the new Leo bulletin had grabbed the many attentions of its by-passers, and even won the hearts of the Leos and Lions that attended the RCC Meeting held in our school. Kudos to the Leos for their creative minds and artistic approaches!

Bulletin Updates

Hari Raya Aidilfitri (also Hari Raya Puasa, literally "Celebration Day of Fasting") is the Malay term for the Muslim festival of Eid ul-Fitr. Hari Raya is also known as Lebaran. Muslims in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore celebrate Eid like other Muslims throughout the world. The term "Hari Raya" literally means "Day of Celebration" — it is also occasionally used to refer to Eid ul-Adha in the form of "Hari Raya Aidiladha". The main greeting used by Muslims in Malaysia and Singapore is "Selamat Hari Raya" which means "Happy Eid" in Malay. Another greeting is "maaf zahir dan batin" which translates loosely to "I seek forgiveness (from you) physically and spiritually", for Hari Raya is a time to reconcile and renew relationships with others.
Fasting
During the Muslim month of Ramadan leading up to Hari Raya, it is mandatory for Muslims to fast from dawn to dusk. All Muslims except the young, old or infirm must fast. Many Muslims also abstain from pleasures such as cigarettes and sexual activities during the daylight of the fasting month.
Widely, markets, or 'Ramadan bazaars' are held in many areas around the country, where all sorts of food and kuih — traditional Malay delicacies — are sold for breaking fast or buka puasa. Hotels and restaurants have also exploited this situation to offer exorbitant Ramadan buffets. This practice of overindulging has been criticised by Muslim clerics, notably the mufti of the state of Kelantan.
Preparation
On the eve of Hari Raya, Muslims will recite the takbir, which is held in mosques and surau (smaller place of worship). In some communities, there will be congregations reciting the takbir from house to house.
In big cities and towns, shopping malls and commercial centres will hold big promotions and price discounts for festive shoppers as people purchase clothes and supplies. Decorations are hung in public areas and Hari Raya songs will be played in shopping complexes. The media, such as the television will host various programs in conjunction with the celebrations.
Many people also traditionally return to their hometown generally from big metropolitan cities to rural areas. This is known as balik kampung — literally going back to one's home town to celebrate Hari Raya with family and friends. At many times, the flux of vehicles on the roads nationwide increased the number of car accidents, including deadly ones, occurring during the festive season. Road safety campaigns are often launched by the authorities ahead of the festivities in the effort of lowering the discomforting number of accidents.
Celebrating
Usually on the eve of the celebrations, family members, especially mothers and housewives, will be busy preparing food, cakes, sweets, biscuits and various delicacies to be served on the day of Hari Raya. Delicacies such as ketupat or rice cake and a meat cuisine called rendang are among the most famous cuisines that are served during this day. Other family members will help in other chores such as decorating and cleaning up the house.
Days before Hari Raya, house compounds, particularly those in the countryside will be lit up with oil lamps known as pelita or panjut. This display of oil lamps will reach its height on the 27th night of Ramadan, called the Tujuh Likur night. 'Likur' literally meaning a figure between 20 and 30, hence 'tujuh likur' means twenty seven. Originally during the early days of the arrival of Islam among the Malays, the purpose of lighting the oil lamps was to attract spirit of passed relatives and angels to descend to people's homes during the night of Lailatulqadar. However after ages has passed, such misconception is regarded counterfactual as much understanding of Islam were obtained. Nowadays the oil lamps are lit solely for decorative purposes.
It is customary for Malays to wear traditional Malay costumes. The dress for men is called baju Melayu while the women's are known as baju kurung and baju kebaya. Traditional textiles such as songket and batik are worn favourably during this day.
Muslims will attend Eid prayer in the morning and consecrate together harmoniously while taking the chance to meet and greet each other. Once the prayer is done, it is also common for Muslims in Malaysia to visit the grave of their loved ones. During this visit, they will clean the grave, perform the recital of the Yasin — a chapter (surah) from the Qur'an and also the tahlil or prayers for the deceased. All these are done in hope that their loved ones are blessed by God and they are spared from the punishment in the grave.
The rest of the day is spent visiting relatives or serving visitors. Hari Raya is a very joyous day for children for this is the day where adults are extra generous. Children will be given token sums of money, also known as duit raya from their parents and elders.
During the night, there are often celebrations with sparklers and firecrackers, albeit restrictions on playing firecrackers enforced by the authorities. Most firecracker stocks are purchased and smuggled illegally from black markets. Safety issues, especially among children are raised and alarming cases relating to injuries caused by playing firecrackers are often reported, which initially led to the banning of playing firecrackers. Despite of the enforcement of banning firecrackers, more Malay children turn to home-made firecrackers such as meriam buluh (bamboo cannon) as alternatives to commercial fireworks. Usually the lighting of firecrackers begins a few days before the end of Ramadan, and continues for about a week afterwards.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, or in Chinese, Zhongqiu Jie (traditional Chinese: 中秋節), is a popular harvest festival celebrated by Chinese people and Vietnamese people (even though they celebrate it differently), dating back over 3,000 years to moon worship in China's Shang Dynasty. It was first called Zhongqiu Jie (literally "Mid-Autumn Festival") in the Zhou Dynasty. In Malaysia and Singapore, it is also sometimes referred to as the Lantern Festival or Mooncake Festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, which is usually around mid or late September in the Gregorian calendar. It is a date that parallels the autumn and spring Equinoxes of the solar calendar. The traditional food of this festival is the mooncake, of which there are many different varieties.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the two most important holidays in the Chinese calendar, the other being the Chinese New Year, and is a legal holiday in several countries. Farmers celebrate the end of the summer harvesting season on this date. Traditionally, on this day, Chinese family members and friends will gather to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon, and eat moon cakes and pomeloes together. Accompanying the celebration, there are additional cultural or regional customs, such as:
Eating moon cakes outside under the moon
Putting pomelo rinds on one's head
Carrying brightly lit lanterns, lighting lanterns on towers, floating sky lanterns
Burning incense in reverence to deities including Chang'e (simplified Chinese: 嫦娥; traditional Chinese: 嫦娥; pinyin: cháng'é)
Planting Mid-Autumn trees
Collecting dandelion leaves and distributing them evenly among family members
Fire Dragon Dances

Diwali (or Deepavali) is a major Hindu holiday, and a significant festival in Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Adherents of these faiths celebrate Diwali as the "Festival of Lights." They light diyas—cotton-like string wicks inserted in small clay pots filled with coconut oil—to signify victory of good over the evil within an individual.
The five day Diwali festival occurs during October and/or November on the Gregorian calendar. On the Hindu calendar it is centered on the new moon day that ends the month of Asvina and begins the month of Kartika, begining on the 13th day of the dark half of Asvina (Asvina 28th) and ending on the 2nd day of the bright half of Kartika (Kartika 2nd). The main day of celebration varies regionally.
In Hinduism, across many parts of India and Nepal, it is the homecoming of Lord Rama of Ayodhya, after a 14-year exile in the forest and his victory over the evil demon-king Ravana. In the legend, the people of Ayodhya (the capital of his kingdom) welcomed Rama by lighting rows (avali) of lamps (deepa), thus its name: Deepavali. Over time, this word transformed into Diwali in Hindi and Dipawali in Nepali, but still retained its original form in South and East Indian Languages.
In Jainism, Diwali marks the attainment of nirvana by Lord Mahavira on 15 October, 527 BC.
Diwali has been significant in Sikhism since the illumination of the town of Amritsar commemorating the return of Guru Har Gobind (1595-1644), the sixth Guru of Sikhism, who was imprisoned along with 53 other Hindu Kings at Fort Gwalior by Emperor Jahangir. After his release he went to the Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) in the holy city of Amritsar, where he was welcomed happily by the people who lit candles and diyas to greet the Guru. Because of this, Sikhs often refer to Diwali also as Bandi Chhorh Divas - "the day of release of detainees."
The festival is also celebrated by Buddhists in Nepal, where majority of Hindu lives, particularly the Newar Buddhists.
In India and Nepal, Diwali is now considered to be a national festival, and the aesthetic aspect of the festival is enjoyed by most Indians and Nepalese regardless of faith.

World Sight Day 2008

Having good health is the paradigm that everyone is looking upon recently with the decreasing rate of health of our society. The same goes to the health of our eye sight. In conjunction with the globally know World Sight Day, we have decided upon the idea of putting up leaflets and posters, implanting the vitality of taking good care of our eyesight. Our creativity-inclined Membership Director had came up with an extraordinary poster with the title, “Care for the Eye”. The poster were immediately approved by our teachers and Leo Advisor, and wasting no time, the Leos worked together to print copies of the poster to posted in all classrooms and also along the corridors. It is very important that the students and teachers as well to be well informed of the dangers that threaten our eyesight and also ways to prevent diseases affecting our eyesight.

Special Appreciation Project ; Good Luck Gifts for PMR (LEO) Candidates

In conjunction to the upcoming PMR examinations that is just around the corner, our club has come up with this project each year to show our appreciation to the Form 3 Leos for their hard work and dedication. Small gifts such as stationary sets of pencils, erasers, pens and correction tape are wrapped nicely with gift wrappers to be given to the Leos. Our faculty advisor, Madam Ooi Saw Geok was there to present the gifts to the Form 3 Leos and also to give a word or two of encouragement to them. Several senior Leos were also there to embrace the event and also to show support in every way. The Leos then grouped together for some photo taking session. It was indeed a simple yet significant event that helped lift the Leos’ spirits amongst the pressure and weightiness of the exam atmosphere that dawned the Leos.

“A Light In the Dark” Mentor-Mentee Programme Volume I is
a programme created with hopes that it will help fellow Leos help each other and seek assistance from each other. The theme, “A Light In the Dark” imposes the need of guidance for the younger Leos in all aspects in this relentless reality of life. This Mentor-Mentee programme will be carried out throughout the fiscal year of 2008/2009.This programme was first proposed by both the Club Secretary and Treasurer as they would want to train up their assistants and also potential candidates of their workload. It was then decided that this programme was to be executed not only to train up the Leos for their respective tasks but also to allow Leos to build the foundation of mutual understanding and faith with one another. For the first part of the programme, which is the volume I, fellow Leos were trained as assistants to their respective chosen posts. Junior Leos were given a chance to attempt report writing, brainstorming, budget writing, and also project organizing.

The Leos were divided into five groups, and each group was given a project to be handled. Before that, committee members of each project were chosen by voting through a show of hands. Each Leo was only entitled to only one project. At least two mentors were put into a group to guide the younger Leos and also to show them the correct procedure of how a project is done and carried out. Appointed secretaries were asked to write a brief report on their respective projects and the reports are to be handed in to the Club Secretary, Leo Chan Ying Zhi. The same goes to the appointed Treasurers, they were given the tasked to write a concise budget of the projects and to be passed to the Club Treasurer, Leo Liew Pui Yee. Organizing Chairmans for the projects were helped by Leo Khoo Soon Boon and Leo Chew Yin Shang to write proposals and as well as to conduct the project accordingly.

The Leo mentors were extremely satisfied with the Junior Leos’ capability with the individual task given to them. The Junior Leos seemed very eager to learn and were able to catch up with the skills efficiently. After a short brainstorming session among the groups, the younger Leos were then given a small orientation talk by Membership Director, Leo Chow Sze Yang regarding the CLD Programme. The Leos were given the proper exposure of the Lions Club and also LEO. In general, we had productively achieved the objectives for Mentor-Mentee Programme Volume I. The Volume II for this programme will be implemented after the examinations for all Leos are finished.

Health Awareness Project 2008 ; Health For Life

Health was the topic of the month for the Health Awareness Campaign held on the 28th September 2008 at the Shah Alam Buddhist Society situated in Bukit Rimau, Shah Alam with focus on creating awareness on the vitality of health to the public. With the slogan “Health for Life”, this campaign centered in giving the limelight of maintaining good health in aspects of both mentally and physically. The Health Awareness Campaign’s main purposes were to empower, educate and encourage the public to care for their health by applying the basic knowledge of prevention and early detection of several diseases. Serving as another annual yearly project highlighted that is carried out each year, this is already the 3rd time in a row that the same Health Awareness Joint Project was held. Due to the upcoming PMR examinations and also the Final Year End Examinations, only 7 Board of Directors were allowed by our Leo Advisor to aid assistance in this project. Despite the small amount, we were dominant enough to cover up for the empty spaces of tasks. The Lions really did use our manpower because we were almost constantly on the move.

We were divided into different tasks although we helped out almost everywhere. But no one was complaining as each of us had our Leo spirit soaring high within ourselves. Some of us whom are able to converse in mandarin were asked to help out in the registration counter whereas the rest was just running about helping around. There were several booths there such as the free health screening, diabetes and blood sugar, stoke, blood pressure, Body Mass Index, Kidney Health, Eye Screening, blood donation bank, Dietician consultation and even Chinese “sinseh” consultation. The Kidney Health booth was the busiest and we helped them out by directing them to fill the forms and to wait for their turn. The same goes for the blood donation bank. We also helped stick up the posters promoting good health and food pyramid all around the hall.
We then welcomed the arrival of RCC Lion Chan Kee Oi who came to visit around the Health Awareness Campaign and took a few photographs with him.

We were also given a lavish vegetarian meal with some high fibre bread and low sugar Milo drinks during lunch break. Then, we continued with our work as the people kept coming persistently. Numerous talks on Stroke, HIV/AIDS, and diabetes were commenced in a special VIP room just next to the hall. We took the opportunity to lash out an invitation to the HIV/AIDS speaker to come over to our school to give a talk. Without hesitating, he agreed after giving us his contact number. Around 12.30 p.m., a colouring and drawing contest was held on the stage of the hall. Approximately 20 children took part in both the contest. It was a great sight to see the children all worked up to win something. The results of the competition were announced and the Lions picked out the 5 best posters out of the all for both categories. It was then that something hilarious happened when the winner was announced, it was found out that the winner have forgotten to write down his/her name. This resulted in the Lions to walk around the place holding up the poster to acknowledge the winner. Luckily for the winner, she was found accompanying her parents at the blood donation bank.

The price-giving ceremony took place after that and 10 prizes were given away. The whole event ended approximately at 2.15p.m. after the entire blood donation procedures have finished. We stayed to pack the chairs and tables, cleaned up and arranged the whole place into order. After a group photograph and exchanging thank yous, we bid the Lions goodbye and went home, beaten to the bones but big smiles were plastered on our faces.

All in all, this Health Awareness Campaign was a huge success with a total of 150 packets of blood donated from the public. Truly, we had a splendid time and the early wake on that Sunday morning had not gone down the drain actually.

1st Regional Committee Chairperson Meeting for Region 4 FY 2008/2009

After receiving a quick briefing from RCC Lion Chan Kee Oi regarding the seating plans, agenda, registration and charging fees, the Leos got into immediate preparation for the meeting. A day before, the school hall was evacuated to enable the Leos to arrange the tables and chairs according to the seating arrangements decided earlier during a meeting with Lion Kee Oi. The tables were arranged in a long diagonal shape of a rectangle. Each Club’s seating arrangement was put into place accordingly to the respective zone number. The tables for each Leo Clubs were labeled systematically with the Leos’ names, posts and clubs. The school hall was then swept and cleaned. Two tables were used as registration counters just outside the hall. After that, the order of nasi lemak for lunch was confirmed again with the canteen workers. The school hall was decorated with the presence of several pots of flowers and plants. Mosquito sprays were put readily at a corner to get rid of the mosquitoes.

On the present day, Leo Yin Hong and Leo Kok Way came as early as 7 a.m. to fix up the P.A. System whereas the Leos helped by arranging the name lists and also the refreshments sponsored by Leo Vivien Chew. The refreshments consisting of Milo packet drinks and Apollo Layer Cake were arranged nicely in stacks just behind of the registration counter. Leo Ying Zhi and Leo Pui Yee got into place for the registration as Leos started to turn up. An amount of RM 5 was charged per entry. Leo Sze Yang and Leo Soon Boon helped by distributing the Milo drinks and cakes to the Leos. Meanwhile, Leo Vivien was busy ushering the Leos to the school hall as the meeting was about to start. Leo Ying Zhi was appointed as the recording secretary for the meeting.

After the meeting was adjourned, the Leos and Lions were led to the canteen where the food was served. Leo Pui Yee and Leo Soon Boon helped the canteen workers with the distribution of the food and mineral water whereas the rest of the Leos have already started cleaning the school hall and arranging back the tables and chairs into their proper places. The Leos arranged the school hall back into the place and cleaned the entire place before going home.

English Vocabulary Enhancement Programme ; A Word A Day

This custom made bulletin board, consisting of three special columns for terms, sentence usage, and definition was sponsored by Taylors College after the idea of installing a mobile bulletin dictionary was proposed to our principal. The bulletin board of about 1 meter width and 40 centimeters long was set up at a favourite study spot, the “Serambi Budi” located near the science laboratories. The foremost objective of this project is to promote better understanding of languages amongst the students and also to improve the students’ fluidity in aspects of writing and speaking in English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and even foreign languages such as Japanese and Korean. This project will be held throughout the whole fiscal year of 2008/2009 and with high hopes that the Junior Leos will continue the programme in the days yet to come.

The vocabularies of words are changed daily, which promises five different words in a week. Dubbed as the “Vocabulary of the Day”, the term or vocabulary picked is always an exotic or unseen term/words to make it interesting enough to capture the attention of students. For the past month and upcoming month, we have decided to begin the programme with English Language. The language decided will be rotated for every two weeks, starting the month of November on request of the teachers and students. The editors of the bulletin board took turns to select the vocabulary of words of their own choices. The term, usage of the term in a sentence form and the thorough definition of the term are the three main things displayed on the bulletin for a better understanding of the words.
Before displaying the items- be it adjectives, nouns, proverbs, adverbs, and even sayings; they will first be checked and verified by the English teachers to avoid any misusage or errors of the words. The response from the students were astoundingly immense, especially students of the upper form who claimed that the vocabulary of words were really helpful and interesting. This project has claimed strings of praises from the outsiders who visited our school and also from the parents. In a nutshell, this language educational basis programme is indeed a successful one, especially since the vocabulary of the day was implemented during conversations and even used in essays (according to teachers). Kudos to the Taylors College for the constructive sponsorship and fellow Leos!

In continuation to the recycle project held just last month, we are now back with the second Recycle Project, named “Go Green II” after the first recycle project held after the Joint Leo Installation. This time, the Leos collected the Milo tetra packet drinks to be recycled after the 1st RCC Meeting was held in our school hall. Leos were asked to kindly leave the Milo drinks on the table so that it can be collected later. Also, we collected the plastic bottles that were distributed together with the Nasi Lemak during the lunch meal after the meeting. The plastic bottles are not meant to be recycled but to be kept to be used as containers for the Garbage Enzyme Project that will be carried out in the month of October by Leo Chan Ying Zhi. Several water in the bottles was not drank finished completely, and so we decided to put the water into good use by watering the plants with the water. The plastic bottles are then washed and packed into paper boxes

This project is held each year during the festive of Mid Autumn, the Mooncake Festival with the Rumah Shalom children. Almost like a promise, each year Leos from our club would pay a visit to the children during this festival to celebrate the importance of togetherness and unconditional love. As the only Leo Club in the same neighborhood, it was and still is a definite responsibility that we, Leos have over these children of Rumah Shalom. Who else, but us, Leos are there to share the love, the companionship and the special bond with these children.

As a Serving Together Leo-Lion Joint Project, the Leos have decided to have this project organized jointly with sponsoring club, Lions Club of Shah Alam City. Lion Khor Lee Kean agreed to our invitation almost immediately after we submitted the proposal of this project. The Lions Club of Shah Alam City was generous enough to sponsor a total amount of RM 500 for the children. The money was used to cover up for the dinner prepared for the children, lanterns, candles and a few packets of rice for the children of Rumah Shalom. The Lions present during the event included RCC Lion Chan Kee Oi, Lion Kievin Yip, Lion Khor Lee Kean, Lion Carol Tan, Lion Tan Meng Yeow, Lion Mimi Lee Lay Mei, and last but not least, our Leo Advisor, Lion Kek Lee Beng. The Leos were utterly contented and pleased that the event was blessed with the arrival of the Lions.

The first agenda of the visit was the ice – breaking session between the Leos, Lions and also the children. It was unfortunate that on the same particular day, some children were also involved in a trip to KL and were unable to celebrate the festive with us. The Leos introduced themselves to the children which eventually prompted the children to do so. Leo Pui Yee then introduced the Lions to the children and the caretaker upon the arrival of all the Lions. After a brief ice- breaking session, the children and Leos were divided into two large groups of guys and girls. The guy Leos led the boys to the field just opposite the home for a game of football whereas the girls stayed with the remaining Leos for several interactive games. The Leos did the ritual for their visit, which is to play doll up with the makeup accessories such as lipstick, lip gloss, blusher, mascara and not forgetting nail varnish. The Leos and the girls had great fun applying makeup on each other while laughing at each other’s comical face. Lion Carol Tan also joined in the fun and painted nail varnish for the girls. After cleaning and washing up, the Leos and girls went to the playground beside the field for a stroll. The Leos and girls ended up playing chasing games like “Tag” and “Ice and Water”.

As the sun began to set, the Leos, children and Lions took a few photos together before returning to the home for a sumptuous dinner. The Leos have prepared chicken rice with soup, salad, kuih lapis and also watermelons for the children. They were really obedient and well-mannered as they say their “thank you” and “please” to the Leos who served them. The Leos and lions also joined in for a meal of mouth-watering chicken rice. Our Leo Advisor,Lion Kek Lee Beng joined the children at the dining table in the kitchen whereas the rest of the Leos sat down in the hallway. It was indeed an amazing sight as a four year old Nigel stood up and said grace in his loudest voice as the rest followed. Lion Lee Beng smiled reassuringly at the children as we looked.

After dinner, it was the time when all the children have been waiting for; - time to play lanterns! The Leos helped the children to light up their lanterns and put on sticks for them to hold so that their hands would not be burned. Hands in hands, the Leos and the children went for a Lantern Walk around the residential area with the company of the Lions. The children were really having a good time, laughing and teasing each other as they walked together. It was an amazing sight, to see the Leos and the children together just like that.

Soon, it was time to say goodbye. The children was reluctant to let us leave, but relented after hearing our promises that we would be back for Christmas. The Leos expressed their greatest thanks and appreciations to the Lions for the contributions and the efforts for the children. It was a truly meaningful event, not just for the children but to all of us, to be blessed by such unconventional bonds of love and company and to believe that love has no boundaries.

“We finish what we have started”

is the mentality instilled in each of the Leos of our club. After the Merdeka month celebration, without any hesitation, it is our duty and responsibility to remove the flags, posters, banners and the decorative items that we had put up a month ago all around the school compound. We would also like to do something in return for the school for everything the school had given us. After school hours on a Friday, several male Leos had offered themselves to the teacher in charge to help take down the flags from the corridors, buildings and also canteen. This project was organized by the School Service Director, Leo Au Wai Chee.
The Leos were careful not to invoke any damage to the flags as they can be reused again for the Merdeka celebration for the upcoming years. With extra care, they took down the flags of all sizes, varying from the long Jalur Gemilang flag we had painted last month to the strings of small flags at the corridor. Next, the Leos removed the decorative items such as leaflets, posters and also cards on the bulletin boards along the corridor. Some of the posters and cards were then given back to the Arts teacher to be posted up in the Arts Corner. The Leos did not only remove the flags and decorative items, but also helped clean up the flags and the bulletin boards to get rid of the smudges formed by the tapes used to stick the banners and posters. The teacher in charge, En. Zaihan thanked the Leos and expressed his appreciation that the Leos were so willing to help out. The Leos were still in high spirits after that and even helped En. Zaihan to pack the flags into the storeroom despite all the tired and hard work they had to go through, climbing up the ceilings to retrieve the flags earlier. Our Leos definitely deserve a standing ovation for their vast dedication on behalf of the Club to the school.
